What we collect
wayoff. works without an account. You never give us an email address, a phone number or a password. What reaches our servers is this:
- The name you pick for a round. You type it yourself when you join a room, and everyone else in that room sees it. Pick a nickname if you would rather not use your real name - nothing checks it.
- What you play. The words you type in Letter Rush, the numbers you guess in Way Off, the answer you enter when a question is about you, any categories you added yourself, and the score that comes out of it.
- Device and app identifiers. An app instance ID from Google Analytics for Firebase, the advertising ID your device provides, and an anonymous sign-in ID that lets your phone talk to a room. None of them carry your name.
- Approximate location. Derived from your IP address, at country or region level. We never ask for and never receive your precise location.
- How the app is used. Which screens you open, which games you start, how long a round takes, plus the usual technical details: IP address, device model, operating system, app version, language and time zone.
Why we collect it
- To run the game. Names, guesses and typed words have to reach the other phones in your room - that is the whole point of a shared round.
- To see what people play. We look at how many rounds are started, which game gets picked and where things break, so we know what to fix and what to build next.
That is the complete list. We do not show ads, we do not profile you, we do not sell anything, and we do not send you marketing email - we have no address to send it to.
Who processes it for us
We do not run our own servers. Everything sits in Google Firebase, which processes this data on our behalf:
- Firebase Authentication - anonymous sign-in, so a phone can join a room
- Firebase Realtime Database - the live state of a room while you play
- Cloud Firestore and Cloud Functions - the summary of a finished game, and cleanup
- Google Analytics for Firebase - usage statistics
- Firebase Remote Config - switching features on and off without an app update
How Google handles it is described in the Firebase privacy documentation. Everything travels over an encrypted connection. Beyond Google we share nothing, unless the law forces us to.
How long we keep it
- The room itself - names, typed words, guesses, scores in progress - is deleted 24 hours after the last activity in it. A cleanup job runs every six hours and removes it for good.
- A summary of each finished game - the game played, when, how long, how many players, their names and final scores, and the settings used - is kept as a statistic for as long as the app exists, unless you ask us to delete it.
- Daily counters - how many rounds were played on a given day - are kept indefinitely. They are plain numbers with nothing personal in them.
- Analytics data is kept for the retention period configured in Google Analytics, currently 14 months, after which Google deletes it.
Deleting your data
Uninstalling the app stops all collection immediately. To have what we already hold removed:
- Write to [email protected] with the subject wayoff data deletion.
- Tell us the name you played under and roughly when you played, or the room code if you still have it. Without that we cannot find your rounds - we have no account to look you up by.
- We confirm and delete within 30 days.
What gets deleted: your name and scores in every stored game summary, and any room still live at that moment. What stays: the daily counters, because they hold no personal data and cannot be traced back to you.
Children
wayoff. is rated for players aged 13 and over and is not directed at younger children. We do not knowingly collect data from anyone under 13. If you are a parent or guardian and believe your child sent us something, write to [email protected] and we will delete it.
Your rights
If you live in the EU or the EEA, the GDPR gives you the right to access, correct, export or delete your data, and to object to how we process it. One email to [email protected] is enough. You can also complain to your local data protection authority; ours is the Austrian Datenschutzbehoerde.
Changes
If we change what we collect, we update this page and move the effective date at the top. Substantial changes get a note in the app.
