What we collect
wayoff. works without an account. You never give us an email address, a phone number or a password.
To make the game work, always:
- The name you pick for a round. Everyone in the room sees it. Use a nickname if you like, nobody checks it.
- What you play. Typed words, guesses, drawings, answers, your own categories and the points that come out of it.
- An anonymous sign-in ID and an installation ID. They let your phone talk to a room and let the app prove it is genuine. Neither contains your name.
- Technical details that every connection brings along: IP address, device model, operating system, app version.
Only with your consent:
- Usage statistics (Google Analytics). Which games and screens you use, how long a round takes, plus device model, operating system, app version, language, a random app instance ID and your approximate location (country, region and city), which Google derives from your IP address.
- Crash reports (Firebase Crashlytics). What happened in the app when it crashed, plus device model, operating system and app version.
We do not collect an advertising ID, and we never ask for your precise location.
Your choice
On first launch the app asks whether we may collect usage statistics and crash reports. You can allow both, decline both or pick just one. Until you decide, none of it is collected, and the app works the same either way.
You can change this at any time under Settings > Privacy. If you switch something off, collection stops immediately and the app instance ID is deleted. The consent is meant for users aged 16 and over; if you are younger, please ask your parents first.
Why we collect it
- To make the game work. Names, guesses and drawings have to reach the other phones in your room. Legal basis: the contract for using the app (Art. 6(1)(b) GDPR).
- So that only genuine apps talk to our servers. Legal basis: our legitimate interest in running the service securely (Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR).
- To see what gets played and where the app crashes, so we know what to fix and what to build next. Legal basis: your consent (Art. 6(1)(a) GDPR), which you can withdraw at any time.
That is the full list. We show no ads, we build no profile of you, we sell nothing and we send no marketing emails.
Who processes it for us
We run no servers of our own. Everything lives in Google Firebase, operated by Google Ireland Limited, Gordon House, Barrow Street, Dublin 4, Ireland, which processes this data on our behalf: the anonymous sign-in, the game rooms, the summary of finished games, the app settings and the check that a request comes from a genuine copy of the app. Only with your consent, Google Analytics for usage statistics and Firebase Crashlytics for crash reports on top.
Data may be transferred to the USA in the process. Google LLC is certified under the EU-US Data Privacy Framework, for which the European Commission has found an adequate level of protection (Art. 45 GDPR). How Google handles it is described in the Firebase privacy documentation. Everything travels over an encrypted connection. Beyond Google we pass nothing on, unless the law forces us to.
How long we keep it
- The room itself (names, typed words, guesses, drawings, running scores) is deleted 24 hours after the last activity in it.
- A summary of every finished game (which game, when, how long, player names, final scores, settings) stays as statistics for as long as the app exists, unless you ask us to delete it.
- Usage statistics stay 14 months with Google Analytics, crash reports 90 days with Crashlytics, then Google deletes them.
Deleting your data
Uninstalling the app stops all collection immediately. To have what we already hold removed, follow the steps on our data deletion page: one email, and we confirm and delete within 30 days.
This website and cookies
wayoff.app does not track you. There is no analytics, no advertising and no third-party script on any page, and the fonts are served from our own host rather than from Google. There is exactly one cookie, and it is only set if you allow it:
- Language choice - cookie wayoff_lang. If you accept cookies in the banner and then pick a language in the footer, this cookie remembers your choice so the site does not switch back on your next visit. It holds only the language code, is sent nowhere but to this site and expires after one year. If you decline, or never touch the language menu, it is never set - the site then simply follows your browser language on every visit.
- Your decision - local storage entry wayoff_consent. Whether you accepted or declined is kept in your browser's local storage so the banner does not come back on every page. It is not a cookie and is never sent to us.
You can change your mind at any time via the “Cookies” link in the footer, or remove both entries by clearing this site's data in your browser. The site keeps working either way.
Two services are involved in showing you this website. Cloudflare hosts and delivers it and, like any web host, sees your IP address and browser details to serve the page and fend off attacks; see the Cloudflare privacy policy. Formspree receives what you type into the feedback form - and only once you press send - and forwards it to our mailbox; see the Formspree privacy policy. Neither sets a cookie on this site.
Children
wayoff. is rated for players aged 13 and over and is not aimed at younger children. We do not knowingly collect data from anyone under 13. The consent to usage statistics and crash reports is meant for users aged 16 and over; younger users need their parents' permission for it. If you are a parent or guardian and believe your child has sent us something, write to [email protected] and we will delete it.
Your rights
If you live in the EU or the EEA, the GDPR gives you the right to access, correct, export or delete your data and to object to processing. An email to [email protected] is enough. You withdraw your consent to usage statistics and crash reports directly in the app under Settings > Privacy. You can also complain to your local data protection authority; ours is the Austrian Datenschutzbehörde.
Changes
If we change what we collect, we update this page and move the effective date at the top. Substantial changes get a note in the app.
